There are approximately 74 steps of varying width and height leading up to the WWII gun placement and cobbled, rough and un-level pathways throughout with a footbridge across a small 30 foot crevasse with views down to the sand below.
In most cases, an easy, relaxed and leisurely climb with intermittent breaks to admire the views is recommended. We would however, caution any visitor with any concerns take advice from their medical practitioner before visiting. The most common reason for anguish is often a fear of heights at the bridge portion of the path with an equal amount of people overcoming their fear to complete the visit.

Unfortunately, due to the nature of the Island and it's inherent restrictions of being a grade II listed building, a national monument and a place of special scientific interest our ability to offer any level of disability access is severely restricted. However we take the issue very seriously and are investigating ways to mitigate the position by providing a virtual tour via our website for those who can not access the Island and view the fort first hand. Please subscribe to our newsletter to be kept up to date with developments.

The Island & Forts Victorian raw water sewerage system is not in keeping with today's modern requirements and therefore we are not able to provide toilet facilities. The closest public convenience is located on the slipway opposite the Island on Castle Beach slipway.
